ACUPRESSURE / ACUPUNCTURE

An ancient Chinese therapy, now being used more and more in the West, acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at certain points to help relieve pain and improve the body's own healing mechanisms. The points are on meridians (energy channels). If there is blockage in energy then a part of the body connected to that meridian may become ill or weak. The needles are thought to release the blockage and help the body to heal itself. Therapist can use thumbs pressure down to the points to release the blockage which have the same results as using the fine needles.

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy had been around for 6000 years or more. The Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils. The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing, massage, and for embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago. Imhotep is the Egyptian god of
medicine and healing. Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.), the father of modern medicine, used aromatherapy baths and scented massage. He used aromatic fumigations to rid Athens of the plague.

The modern era of aromatherapy is dawned in 1920s when the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy for the therapeutic use of essential oils. He was fascinated by the benefits of lavender oil in healing his burned hand without leaving any scars. He started
investigating the effect of other essential oils for healing and for their psychotherapeutic benefits .

During world war II (1939-1945), the French army surgeon Dr. Jean Valnet used essential oils as antiseptics. Later, Madame Marguerite Maury elevated aromatherapy as a holistic therapy. She started prescribing essential oils as remedy for her patients. She is also credited with the
modern use of essential oils in massage.

Essential oils can benefit health on physical, psychological and pharmacological levels and are thus very suitable for use in a health care environment. When ill or hospitalized, one or more of the patient's five senses may be affected. Smell is a powerful stimulant, both of the memory and the rest of the body and thus aromatherapy's combination of aromas and touch can enhance the life of a patient to great effect. With the advent of antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs' research is being undertaken using essential oils to prevent bacterial growth and assist in cases where body tissue is slow to heal. Aromatherapy works the best when it works on the mind and body simultaneously.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES

Dr. Edward Bach, a doctor and a practicing homeopath, turned away from both traditional medicine and homeopathy believing that there was a more natural and holistic way to treat illness. He developed these 38 remedies which are infusions of plants with water and alcohol, based on his research in the country side. The remedies aim to treat mental and emotional problems, which often precede and cause physical symptoms.

COLOR THERAPIES

Color therapy or chromo therapy is the use of color to balance energy wherever our bodies are lacking, be it physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental. It is based on the underlying principle that each organ and body system has its own characteristic vibrational energy, and disorders can be healed by applying the color of the corresponding vibrational energy, either to the whole body or to the specific organ. Each color found in the visible light spectrum has its own wavelength and its own frequency, which produces a specific energy and has a nutritive effect.

The therapy entails the usage of various tools such as gemstones, candles, wands, prisms, colored fabrics, bath treatments, and colored eye wear. Color therapists use techniques such as "color puncture" which combines the concept of color and acupuncture as a way to clear blockages and restore healthy energy.

CHIROPRACTIC

A chiropractor manipulates the joints of the body, specifically the spine, in order to relieve pain. It works on the basis that pain is often caused by a nerve which is not functioning properly and thus the spine, which the central nervous system runs through, is the focus of the therapy. It is especially useful for any lower back and neck pains as well as headaches. This service will be offered by a HK registered Chiropractor.

HYPNOTHERAPY

In Early Hypnohistory, people have been entering hypnotic-type trances for thousands and thousands of years; various forms of meditation play an important role in many cultures'religion. But the scientific conception of hypnotism wasn't born until the late 1700s. The father of modern hypnotism is Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), an Austrian physician. Mesmer believed hypnosis to be a mystical force flowing from the hypnotist into the subject (he called it "animal magnetism"). Although critics quickly dismissed the magical element of his theory, Mesmer's assumption that the power behind hypnosis came from the hypnotist, and was in some way inflicted upon the subject, took hold for some time. Hypnosis was originally known as mesmerism, after Mesmer, and we still use its derivative, "mesmerize," today.

John Elliotson (1791-1868), an English physician holding a chair at University College London was disbarred from the medical profession as a direct result of his demonstrations of animal magnetism, while James Esdaile, a surgeon was operating on his patients using 'mesmeric sleep' as
his anesthetic of choice in the 1840s. The medical profession was therefore divided on its opinion of the usefulness of mesmerism.

It wasn't until 1843 that the terms 'hypnotism' and 'hypnosis' were coined by James Braid (1795-1860), a Scottish surgeon working in Manchester. He found that some experimental subjects could go into a trance if they simply fixated their eyes on a bright object, like a silver watch.
He believed that some sort of neurophysiological process was involved and that hypnosis was very useful in disorders where no organic origin to the problem could be identified (e.g. headaches, skin problems etc.) He showed that a single stimulus (e.g. a word or an object) was enough
to re-hypnotize his subjects.

Support for the teaching of the therapeutic use of hypnosis in medicine finally came in 1955. Today, Hypnotherapy / Hypnosis is currently used in dentistry, medicine and psychology and has proved helpful if used alongside more conventional treatments and therapies.

HERBALISM

Herbalism is the use of plants, usually the whole plant to make herbal remedies. It is an ancient, traditional medicine – what is now considered traditional medicine only replaced it in the last three hundred years.

HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy's roots emerge from the findings, teachings and writings of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). Hahnemann graduated from medical school in 1779 and started his own medical practice. He soon began his first homeopathic experiments in 1790, as a result of his disillusionment with such common medical practices of the day as purging, bloodletting,
and the use of toxic chemicals.

Homeopathy treats like with like. By using minute doses of the bacteria, virus or substance which has caused the problem in the first place (i.e. cat hair in a remedy for an allergy to cat hairs) the treatment builds up the patient's resistance and immunity to the problem substance or bacteria.

KINESIOLOGY

In the 1960’s a Detroit Chiropractor, Dr. George Goodheart, began combining acupuncture theory with a variety of western discoveries that involved touch reflexes and muscle testing. He discovered that there was a relationship not only between meridians and major organs but also muscles. He called his system Applied Kinesiology.

Kinesiology is a holistic treatment that focuses on testing the muscles and energy meridians to discover and then treat the body's imbalances on all levels: chemically, energetically, physically and mentally. Using different positions and the application of pressure to the limbs, the kinesiologist can determine whether there are any energy blocks in the body and correct them through firm massage. Kinesiology is preventative and, like many complementary therapies, aims to treat the whole person.

NUTRITION

Eating a healthy, nutritionally-balanced diet is easier said than done with today's hectic lifestyles. Eating away from home; the latest food fads; overstored and convenience foods; missed meals and slimming can all contribute to our not getting enough of the right nutrients. Nutritionists always recommend us to have a balance diet that we should receive a complete balance of vitamins and minerals every day, and that has to be reach RDA level ‘Recommended Daily Allowance'. However, this is not always practical for us to do so on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, we should take a multi-mineral & multi-vitamin daily supplement every day, to complement our eating habits and to help maintain long-term good health. Insufficiency of particular vitamin or mineral will affect our body's system cause disease. Our professionals will help to evaluate the lifestyle and eating habits, give suggestions, and select the optimum eating plan or supplements for clients.

YOGA / MEDITATION

Both yoga and meditation have long been known to have beneficial, holistic effects and they are very useful self-help therapies. We teach the learner to have control of the body, mind and soul. Yoga does this through physical exercise, including adopting different postures, relaxation techniques and breathing exercises.

Meditation uses different focuses (such as visualization, a candle, a mantra) to help a person find calm and a sense of their own centre. Meditation has the physiological effects of a short sleep i.e. the body goes into the healing and recharging mode it adopts when we sleep, allowing the muscles to relax and the circulation to become more efficient, becomes well-being.
